Greg Rivera and Mike Essl are co-owners of the biggest Mr. T collection ever and they’re currently looking for Contemporary Artists to submit designs for consideration for an upcoming art show called “I Pity the Dolls!: Contemporary Artists Create Homemade Mr.T Dolls.”

The exhibition will take place at the Orchard Street Gallery located at 60 Orchard Street in the historic Lower East Side, Manhattan from June 9th through July 10th, with an Opening Reception on June 9th.

this is an excerpt from his email to me:

“The exhibition will feature my (Greg Rivera’s) personal collection of 1980’s homemade Mr.T dolls collected over the years, as well as handmade dolls created by emerging and established contemporary artists like you!

Essentially, the dolls are based on the Cabbage Patch Kid doll design. You can see photos of them on mrTandMe.com.

Each artist who is chosen to participate will be given a ‘Miss Martha Originals’ Mr.T doll pattern book from 1984. It has a paper pattern that you can cut the fabric to, as well as detailed instructions on sewing and dressing the doll… The dolls will each reflect your unique style and interpretation of the pattern, but all done in the spirit of Mr. T!

The artist’s dolls will be sold for a charity of Mr. T’s choosing as well as Cancer Care, and American Cancer Society-Rally for Life. If you are not aware of it, Mr.T is currently living with cancer… We have been in contact with Mr. T’s agent and although the details have not yet been finalized, Mr.T is very interested in the show. His agent has said that Mr.T is willing to sign dolls that are going to be sold, and there is also the possibility of him attending the show opening! Your participation would not only help in the success in the show, it will also help to promote a great charity.

If you are interested in participating in the show, or have any more questions about the show, please contact me greg@mrtandme.com for submissions and/or design proposals.”
