PSA: Artist Insurance

I went to a lecture at Artists Space last night and
wanted to let everyone know about an exciting
program. Not appropriate for all of us, but worth
knowing about. There is a pilot program at Woodhull
Medical Center (North Brooklyn, near Williamsburg)
that will be expanding to other city public
hospitals. Meanwhile, they accept anyone from the 5
boros.

It is not an insurance plan per se, but a low cost
or even no cost way to obtain medical services.
Based on your income they determine whether you are
eligible for any government plans, and if not give
you a sliding scale fee ($15 to $60 per doctor’s
visit). The most interesting part of the program is
the “Artist Access” plan which allows you to
“exchange your art for healthcare”. By this they
don’t mean give them a piece of art, but do art
therapy/art classes with patients, perform, sing,
whatever is an expression of your form of art in
exchange for credits toward future healthcare ($40
worth of healthcare per hour of service).

Anyway: you can read about it here.
Pass the word along to others who may be
non-insured or under-insured.
