Orchard Street Art Gallery Presents 150 New Works from Artist AZStar78 in “Odds and Ends”
New York City, NY - February 24, 2006 – Up & coming young artist Daniel Anthony St. George II, also known as AZStar78 presents his newest body of work as a follow-up to his last solo show at Halcyon in 2003, “Whole Milk”. This next solo show, “Odds and Ends” will be exhibited from February 24th – March 19th at Orchard Street Art Gallery in Manhattan’s au-courant Lower East Side. Throughout this year AZStar has created another raw body of work, 150 8”x8” drawings for a series entitled “9600 Inches”, the primary work for “Odds and Ends”. “9600 Inches” is an autobiographical set of pen & ink characters and diary writings. Said to be prolific and a powerful workhorse, when asked to comment, AZStar said about his 150 new pieces, “I wanted to create a large body of work in order to show that drawings can be as moving as their painted counterparts.”
Rather than showing minimal amounts of work, AZStar has chosen to show a large yet cohesive collection that he has amassed over this past year, giving a deeper insight into the artist’s busy life. All the works are heavily embalmed in symbolism mixed with a flow of unconsciousness. “Odds and Ends” represents AZstar’s daily struggles with angst, failure, love, passion & desires through sharp and delicate line work. The viewers are taken into all of these elements and are able to wander in AZStar’s world, real or otherwise. His characters are estranged in complicated surroundings, many times mutilated and alienated. “Typically they are solitary and rarely interact with other characters, but as a whole they create a mosaic in which you realize that all of the characters have these individual doubts and worries, yet they are not alone,” AZStar rationalizes.
Along with “9600 Inches”, the public will also be able to see 800 of the original drawings from “Whole Milk” as well as 40 pear sculptures from the “Heads” series and a few select hand-made screen prints. On top of all this, AZStar will be selling a limited edition book exclusively made for the exhibition. Over 1000 works will be shown in total. This menagerie of imagery is sure to fulfill many of those who visit the exhibit.
The opening reception for “Odds and Ends” will be held at Orchard Street Art Gallery on 139 Orchard Street between Rivington & Delancy (near F,V,J,M,Z subway stops)on Friday night from” 7 pm – 10 pm.” Guests will enjoy complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday 1 pm – 7 pm or by appointment. For more information, please contact orchardstreetart@hotmail.com.
