A tip from StreetRes homie, DumbBastard on an article in the Los Angeles City Nerd

Last week, Assemblyman Ron Calderon (D-Montebello) introduced AB 2923 which “requires the collection of all costs associated with graffiti abatement imposed upon a minor to be included with the renewal or registration of a motor vehicle. This bill would also authorize a court to suspend a person’s driving privilege for up to three years on acts of graffiti & vandalism.”

    NP.

Interesting article. From a legislation standpoint this is better than my city which severly penalizes property owners if they do not remove graffiti within a certain time period.

As an artist this law seems rather draconic though. Given that most graffiti artists aren’t wealthy, upping fines will just make them almost impossible to pay, thus it doesn’t benefit anyone. Fines for something like graffiti are supposed to penalize, not sink a person financially. Removing driving privileges for up to three years is rather excessive as well. It isn’t like we are drunk driving.

So, in review they are upping fines for a statistically poorer class, then removing their ability to drive to jobs (thus their ability to earn more money more easily to pay the high fines) for up to three years. Really bright of them.
