Process Invisible 2 – Call For Submissions

What: A sticker and wheat paste show. The gallery walls of Street Level will be covered in cardboard, and the stickers and wheat pastes will collaged to create a representation of the current state of street art. The first Process Invisible show took place in 2004 and is one of my all time favorite shows. Here are a few pics to give an idea of what to expect:

All themes, styles, and images are welcomed with a couple of exceptions. No advertising (other than artist self promotion), or racist images will be included.

At the shows end we will sell pieces of the collage as a fundraiser for a legal fund for the City of Portland vs. Clear Channel legal defense. Clear Channel is challenging the cities strict advertising laws and trying to get the same laws applied to public murals. Basically they want the laws overturned and are using free speech as an excuse to get what they want. A local group is representing the mural artists interest and we want to support them. Otherwise nothing submitted to this show will be sold for profit.

Where & When: Street Level Gallery, Portland, Oregon, USA. The show will open on Saturday June 9th and stay up all month long and part of July.

How: Just send us your work by May 31st, 2007 to:

Street Level Gallery
909 N Beech, #B
Portland, OR
97227
USA

    This is a great show!
Your support for the street & mural artists of Portland, OR is very welcome . . . THANK YOU!

In mid-May, 2007, Judge Michael Marcus issued his Opinion and Order on the Clear Channel v City of Portland (murals) case. He was very favorable to murals- saying that there is NO reason the City cannot make a distinction between murals and signs. As of this writing, Clear Channel has indicated their intention to appeal this decision, but no legal brief has been filed by CC, yet.
Legal language is now being crafted by the City attorneys that could open the way for more murals.
This legal-legislative City process could take months to conclude, however.

What can YOU do right now?

    – Paint a wall! Permits for works under 200 sq feet can be applied for through the City’s Bureau of Development Services (on SW 4th Ave). If your project works with a non-profit (or you are one)- it’s possible that the permit fee can be waived (it’s usually under $150- depends on the exact size, location, and other criteria). Call BDS. – Get informed about murals in PDX, then tell your friends! – Contact City Hall. Letters to the Mayor & City Council members explaining the importance of art and the urgent need for youth activities (like mural projects) can help.
Contact In Defense of Art for more details.
